Why Social Media Matters to Your Small Business

Social media is here to stay. It offers individuals and business owners alike a great deal of ability to get the word out about any event or happening. Most people use social media of some kind – and what’s more, they keep it close to them with their mobile devices at the ready. People share everything on social media, from their baby’s first steps to more mundane things like what they’re eating for dinner tonight.

Being online and using social media to promote your business offer many benefits.

* Brand Recognition – If you want people to recognize your brand, it’s important to develop a branded appearance that you use across all social media networks. Use the same logos, in different sizes, and stay true to your brand at all times.

* Slow Marketing Converts – When you provide information over a long period of time, your audience becomes accustomed to your message. Over time they develop trust, and after being exposed to you a few times they are more likely to place an order.

* Improves Authority – When you often post a lot of accurate and helpful information, people start viewing you as an authority on the topic. Once you’re viewed as an authority, you will start making even more money because people will be waiting to hire you or buy your products.

* Increases Brand Loyalty – The more people see your brand out there, the more loyal they will become toward what you offer. Your offerings should represent what your brand stands for and you’ll find that people become more loyal to you as you stick to what you know and believe in.

* Increases Traffic to Your Website – Use social media to share and promote your blog posts, and new offerings will increase the traffic to your website exponentially. One of the best ways to rank higher on search results is to be active on social media.

* Is Inexpensive – Social media is not an expensive form of marketing. It can also be fun. Guard yourself from getting sidetracked, but always be interactive and engaging with your followers. Remember, time is money. Automate what is not direct communication so that you can get more done in less time.

* Allows for Useful Consumer Engagement – Social media can let you engage with users in a very beneficial way. You can have deep conversations about many topics. Just remember to keep it professional and handle controversy carefully.

* Works with Mobile Devices – Better than most websites and email, social media works effortlessly on mobile devices. Social media and mobile really go hand-in-hand. People take their devices on dates, and to bed – you’ve never been closer to your audience than now.

If you’re not participating on social media then you need to change that right now. You don’t have to be everywhere; just find out where your audience hangs out and go there. Then, use that social network to your fullest ability.

You should be doing social media!

Is your business doing social media?  If not, why not!  There is a whole new audience out there for your business on the internet. An international audience that speak many languages. The active users on social media are shown from statistics in 2015 from the www.socialmediahat.com.  As you can see the audiences out there are in the millions and up to 1.44 Billion on Facebook.

Now, obviously, they all don’t want your product or service however, did you even know there were so many people on these social media platforms?

You are missing out on an audience you didn’t even know about and they don’t know about you unless you are on their platform.  I am creating a Membership site for trainings on how to setup and market within each social media platform. Each platform has its own audiences, its own culture, its own ways of social interactions and its own ways to interact with its audience.

Content Marketing on Social Media into your Marketing Plan

As a business, why do you have to spend time creating and sharing content on social media? You want to spend your time selling and developing product or service to your customers! You don’t want to tweet, friend or google?!

Well,

  1. It increases your followers for your social media platform,  whether it is Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Linkedin, Instagram or Pinterest or any other platform that your audience hangs out, which increases your reach.

According to +Belle Beth Cooper of +Buffer in https://blog.bufferapp.com/10-secrets-to-finding-and-sharing-better-content-on-social-media

they “found that the optimal number of tweets to engage your followers is 1-4 per hour, and for Facebook it’s no more than 1 per day. ”

So, by doing the social media strategically by:

a: deciding where your audience hangs out

b: creating a presence on that platform with your business

c: finding out what social media posts they like on that platform

d: create an editorial calendar for creating the posts and how many you need and when to post them

You can increase your followers (or in business terms, your prospects) for your business.

    2. Sharing content increases your authority in your field.

Whether you share your own content about your business topic or you curate other authority sites and add your comments, you can be seen as someone who is knowledgable and “top of your game”.

    3. Your followers expect more content from you and if they are trained to open, they get more value from your content.

    4.  If you consistently post on a regular basis, good value content whether yours or you curate others content, your followers expect to see it and it becomes a habit for them to open and learn from you.  Being a teacher in your field for others and giving them posts of value with tips and knowledge they can use, this increases your credibility too.

5. Your followers see you as a thought leader and your credibility rises which means your customers develop the habit of buying what you are selling as they see you as an authority.

As your followers expect your content in social media and you give them value and you become an authority in the field, your relationship with your followers (prospects) becomes closer especially if you reply to any comments about your post or you add some personal posts during this process.

People will get to know, like and trust you all through social media.  Content marketing on social media is well worth doing as it is a free form of accessing people throughtout the world spreading information about you and your business!

Social Media Statistics

What social media platform should your business be on sending out messages and engaging with potential customers?

     It depends.

You have to know who are your ideal customers.

You have to know where your ideal customers hang out.

You have to know what your ideal customer needs.

You have to know how your ideal customers interacts with which social platform.

If your ideal audience is not on a specific social platform you need to know this so you don’t waste your time and money sending out messages on the wrong platform!

For example from a Pew Internet Survey 2012 (so always good to find the newest surveys but this is a good example) on teenagers.

Texting dominates teens’ general communication choices. Overall, 75% of all teens text, and 63% say that they use text to communicate with others every day.

  • 39% of teens make and receive voice calls on their mobile phones every day.

  • 35% of all teens socialize with others in person outside of school on a daily basis.

  • 29% of all teens exchange messages daily through social network sites.

  • 22% of teens use instant messaging daily to talk to others.

  • 19% of teens talk on landlines with people in their lives daily.

  • 6% of teens exchange email daily.

So, if your target market is teenagers (I would update this survey because social media can change quickly) then you might decide to use Instagram, Snapchat or Youtube or… which can be viewed easily on a smartphone.

So, it depends is a good statement because what social media you use will depend on your target audience.  However, with at a minimum of 26 million for major social media platforms, there is a large population  anywhere to market to as long as you check the demographics and other statistics about each social media platform before using your time and money on that platform.

Mike Allton of www.socialmediahat.com collected the 2015 statistics on the various social media platforms.  You can see the original post at Social Media Active Users .
